Petralona Cave or Kokkines Petres is located near Thessaloniki in eastern Greece at the foot of Mount Katsika. It is a limestone cave and was excavated in 1960 by a number of research groups form the University of Thessaloniki. “The cave is part of an extensive cavern system in calcareous Mesozoic deposits containing large quantities of fossil mammalian bones including horse, cave bear, cave lion and others” (Britannica Online).
The most important find was that of an early hominid skull almost entirely intact except for the jaw bone. The fossilized skull has been dated from possibly 70,000 years ago, but is most commonly agreed upon to be around 40,000 years old. Either date still makes it one of the earliest human finds in Europe. It was found, “attached to a stalactitic column” within the cave (Britannica Online). The skull is thought to possibly be a transitional type between Homo Erectus and Homo Sapiens and seems to be at least somewhat related to the Neanderthal in structure. However, it differs slightly from the Neanderthal, because “due to the structure of the face it is estimated to have had a larger jaw” (Britannica Online). It does have a large brow and slanting forehead much like that of the Neanderthal so it seems to be an early relative of them. It is an odd find as stated in Britannica Online, “While the skull seems more advanced than Homo Erectus, it has some Homo Erectus features; on the other hand, it can be distinguished from both Neanderthals and from modern Homo Sapiens, while possessing some features that are more advanced than Homo Erectus.”
